Tasty ad

Erik points to an ad that recently came under fire in Houston and was subsequently dropped by Comcast Cable.

Alicia Silverstone’s Veggie PSA

I'm not sure if the beef people were offended by an ad promoting vegetarianism, the bible-thumpers were offended by a woman's behind, or the fat people were offended by a slender woman. I personally don't see anything controversial about it, and think we could use more ads promoting vegetarianism on TV, especially if they continue to star Ms. Silverstone.

More commercials promoting vegetarianism? If you say so, but who would benefit from such an ad financially besides, say, Boca Burgers?

Well, you would as your insurance premiums would fall. It is pretty well documented that vegans and vegetarians have far lower rates of heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, and most other major diseases than non-vegetarians. So if more people adopted a veggie way of life, the number of people needing health care for these diseases would fall, and your insurance premiums would fall.

Additionally, more people adopting a veggie diet would have impacts on the global warming issue. A recent study showed that livestock production is responsible for approximately 18 percent of greenhouse-gas emissions globally, which is a higher share than the transportation sector is responsible for. So a global shift away from meat (although it is really only a first-world issue) could reduce the rate of global warming, something that will have massive financial and environmental impacts in your lifetime. Which will statistically be shorter than mine because you eat meat.
